I am an absolute beginner to Yoga (and maybe exercise in general) how should I start?   Bikram hot yoga is the perfect yoga for beginners because all the postures are manageable with no crazy pretzel stuff. All the classes are the same sequence and postures so you can come to ANY class to start. There is no special “beginners class”.  Every class is mixed levels. We have new people in EVERY class we hold.  There are no reservations, it is first come first serve. Although some classes can be more crowded that energy is powerful and great for new students. If you get to the studio at least 10 to 15 minutes before class starts there will always be plenty of room. Come try and after a few classes you will love this yoga!

What Should I Bring/Wear?   Try to hydrate at least 45 minutes before class (electrolytes are helpful).  You need a yoga mat and a bath size towel to place on the mat. You may want to bring several towels to use and to dry off afterwards. Most students bring or buy water. We have mats, towels and drinks for rent/sale.  Yoga pants or shorts are fine. Swim trunks are fine. Most students avoid cotton as that gets heavy with sweat. Some sort of sweat wicking material is helpful.  Some men prefer going shirtless, others wear shirts..

Can I do just One Class?     This is a question we are often asked by prospective students. While often a new student can feel & understand how great Bikram Hot Yoga is after only a single class most people need at least 4 or 5 classes (preferably in a short period of time - 1-2 weeks). The reason for this is that students must get used to the process (ie. the heat, doing yoga maybe for the 1st time, detoxification, etc). The difference between your first class and your 3rd or 4th class is incredible. The key is to be diligent and committed and to have patience and truly give this incredible yoga a chance to work. Allow yourself to take breaks especially in the beginning as you begin to build endurance. This is a process and needs a little time to start working. So yes you can certainly do one class but really consider doing the Intro Package and try to come 3-5 times. You are also welcome to take advantage of the First Month Special as well.

Is there a beginner class and which ones are less crowded?  All the classes feature the same sequence of postures (Bikram Yoga) so you can start with any one on the schedule.  The 6:30 a.m., 12 noon, 4 p.m (Friday)and 7:30 p.m classes tend to be more lightly attended but remember that bigger classes can have great energy and lots of other practitioners to learn from.

I’m not flexible, is Yoga for me?   Yes, Bikram Hot Yoga is beginning yoga and is great for all levels. Bikram Yoga builds strength, flexibility and balance. So if you need more flexibility you will gain that with a consistent practice.

Is Yoga a real workout?   Absolutely!  Bikram Hot Yoga is an incredible workout.  The heat promotes sweating, detoxification and weight loss. The more you practice the more cardiovascular the Yoga becomes. This is true “Hatha” Yoga and is very much based on physical fitness. Most students cancel their gym memberships and just focus on the Yoga.

Can Bikram Hot Yoga help my stress level?   Yes, the rigorous nature of the practice allows you to release endorphins into your system. You will feel great for hours or even days afterwards. One of the other great benefits is that it will strengthen your mind and help you deal more effectively with life’s challenges!

Why is Bikram Hot Yoga so popular?   People have limited time these days so Bikram Yoga is a great “full service” workout. You will raise your heart rate, tone your muscles, plus normalize your internal organs and systems. Your sense overall well being increases and you have more energy for other things!  A good practice takes time so the best thing is to be patient and have a positive attitude!
